Typical banana cables, patch cords or test leads have male banana plugs at each end. There are situations however, when banana jack cables are useful.
Banana jack-to-plug (female-to-male) cables are used to either extend a banana plug cable or to convert a shrouded banana plug cable to a standard banana connection. Jack-to-jack banana cables are often used as splices to between two male cables, one of which may terminate in some other application specific connector. In this situation the user may normally use each cable separately but need to occassionally combine the cables for a specific test - E.g., some ground loop tests require very long cable runs.
4mm banana jack cables are available in various combinations of standard, shrouded or retractable-sleeve banana connectors. If a specific cable can be IEC rated, the rating follow the rating of the lowest rated connector used. Details for each product will be found under product specifications.
4mm banana jack test leads are availble in current ratings up to 36A with either PVC or Silicone insulated, stranded, test lead wire. Test lead wire composed of the finest strands (and highest strand count) will not only be the most flexible, it will also be the most reliable - capable of withstanding the highest number of flex cycles. PVC test lead wire is the most popular choice for clean indoor environments when wire flexibility is not important. Silicone is considered the best jacket material for test leads. It combines the desirable features of high flexibility, even at sub-zero temperatures, along with a resistance to burns and chemicals but at a higher cost.
