Pomona Electronics Triaxial Cables

Triaxial cables are a standard accessory when conducting precise low-current testing.

Triaxial cable is similar to coaxial cable with the addition of an outer copper braid that functions as a shield to protect the coaxial conductors. This outer braid, also known as a shield, is grounded and passes both ground loop and capacitive field noise currents away from signal-carrying coax. The presence of the outer shield in triaxial cable greatly improves the “signal to noise” ratio over that of standard coaxial cable.

Triax cable can be used in driven shield applications where the inner conductor and first braid are driven in parallel at the transmitting end to work against the outer braid, which is insulated above ground. The inner braid floats at the receiving end, providing a “Faraday” shield between the inner conductor and the outer shield. The Faraday shield greatly reduces the distributed capacitance, which reduces cable losses and loading. The driven shield use for triax cable is effective where distributed capacity in coaxial cable limits data accuracy, especially in high frequency transducer data systems.
